A video file is a container: one track holds the picture, other tracks hold sound, subtitles or timecode. To mute a video, MuteVideo removes the audio tracks and copies the picture track exactly as it was — nothing is decoded or compressed again.
For MP4 and MOV, only the file’s index is rewritten in your browser. The picture data is referenced in place, so even large files finish in seconds without filling your device’s memory.
For WebM, MKV and AVI, an FFmpeg engine compiled to WebAssembly runs in your browser tab and performs the same stream copy.
Your video is read from your device and saved back to it. It isn’t sent to a server.
MuteVideo removes every audio track and copies the picture exactly as it is. There is no re-encoding, so resolution, frame rate, bitrate and quality match the original. The new file is usually a little smaller, depending on how much space the audio took up.
The video is processed inside your browser and is never uploaded. The site still loads its own application files and records basic anonymous usage statistics, but these never include file names or media.
MP4, MOV and M4V files, including iPhone and Android recordings, are handled directly in the browser, up to 4 GB each, typically in about a second or a few. WebM, MKV and AVI use a separate engine that downloads once (about 31 MB) and accepts files up to 500 MB on desktop or 150 MB on mobile.
When the file is ready, you get a preview and a short report: container, video codec, resolution, frame rate, duration, and size before and after. If the video had no audio to begin with, MuteVideo tells you, and you can still download it.
